Welcome back everyone!

The summer holidays are over and we hope that everyone had a lovely summer!

P4/3 Trip to Skara Brae

On Wednesday 9th June the P4/3's went to visit Skara Brae as part of their term Project. They also visited the Ring of Brodgar where they were met by Rangers who taught them about the stones and also about the wildlife around the ring. On arrival at Skara Brae they first visited the exhibition and the replica house and then went onto seeing the main houses.

The afternoon was spent having a "Skara Brae" house building competition on the beach. Everyone agreed that it had been a fantastic day and although the sun didn't quite make it out, we were thankful that it did not rain!

Hats for Haiti

On Friday 5th March the pupils and staff at St Andrews took part in

"Wear a hat for Haiti day"

Most pupils and staff paid to wear a hat all day!

The school managed to raise over £200 for the people of Haiti!

Well done and thank you to everyone who took part!

Tom Muir tells folk tales

We were really lucky to have Tom Muir come into St Andrews as part of World Book day. The whole school were delighted to hear his telling of such famous folk tales like The Stoor Worm which some of the pupils will be displaying through the use of felt work soon. The pupils and staff were spell bound throughout his tales.

Link-up with Michael Rosen

After our exciting morning with Tom Muir, the P4, P5, P6 and P7's went on to do some more exciting activities! they took part in a special link-up with BBC Scotland with Michael Rosen. He introduced the pupils through a live transmission from Edinburgh, into the wonderful world of poetry, which had the pupils in stitches at times! He showed how exciting and entertaining poetry can be and he motivated the pupils to start writing their own poems using their own experiences and imagination.

French Day in P6

Leanne Smith from Stromness Academy came into school to talk to the P6's about France as part of their class topic this term on Europe. Leanne lived in Pau, in South West France for 9 months teaching the French pupils English. She came to share her experiences with us and to teach us what a French pupil may eat for breakfast and tell us what a typical day at school would be like for a French pupil. Everyone got to try crossiants, chocolate bread and hot chocolate. Needless to say not a crumb was left, not even on Mr Gallacher's plate. A big Thank You to Leanne and also to the kitchen staff for preparing all the food.

Eco Committee

A lot more members have joined the Eco Commitee this term. Members from the Orkney Islands Council-councillors Jim Foubister and Andrew Drever have also joined.

The classes at St Andrews are now competing against each other for the Funky Chicken award. Pupils are busy turning off lights, laptops and data projectors (if the teachers aren't using them that is!)

Ideas are also still needed for the Wibbly Wobbly Wall! There are two sections of the wall still to be completed so pupils are being asked for any ideas that they may have.

And..........last but not least

We are proud to say that St Andrews has received the Silver Award and are now working towards the Green Flag. Hopefully with a little extra hard work at keeping our school 'green' we should gain the Green Flag in the future.

School Trips

We often go out on school trips to particular events or simply to visit places here in Orkney and also further south. Here are some of our visits.

Looking after our teeth

Our health is very important at St Andrews and as well as taking care of our diets, we also take care of our teeth. Cathy comes in every day to help the P1's, P2's and P3's clean their teeth.

From leaves to trees - we get planting

Our very own

Skara Brae

We have built our very own Skara Brae! Pupils can now pretend to be children of the Stone Age! I wonder what their teachers would have taught them?

Saving Energy!

As part of our campaign to become more 'green' in our thinking, we have been discussing ways in which we can save power in our school. The P7's did a study of what electrical items we use throughout the day and suggested to us the ways in which we could 'cut back' We now turn off lights and other appliances when not in use such as Smart Boards and computers etc.

Tweak My Beak!

A pupil made us these wonderful light switch coverings to remind us to turn off the classroom lights during break times.

Recycled flowers!

The pupils made some beautiful flowers using only recycled items

We started off our New Year like the rest of the country with lots of snow. Click on the link to see some snowy pictures of our school.

Cool Seas Visit

Ever had a whale in your school? Or a dolphin or amazingly enough a great white shark?? Well we did last week! And better still they were all life size! Thankfully though they were made out of inflatable plastic and none of the pupils came to any harm!

It was really interesting to see the size and scale of the animals and learn more about them! The pupils all discovered that a coconut is infact more dangerous than a great white shark and they also learnt about how throwing away rubbish can harm our beautiful sea creatures.

Seeing Light Show

We were also very lucky to have visitors from St Andrews University last week as part of the Science Festival here in Orkney. They came to introduce us to their SEEING LIGHT SHOW which was really interesting

The pupils all got the chance to join in with group work and have fun with some of the items that they brought in to show us.

Visitors to our school

We often get visitors to our school, sometimes from as far away as Canada!

The staff and pupils always look forward to people coming in to see us and sharing their knowledge and experiences with us.

Valerie hangs up her peenie

After 46 years of being a cook Valerie has decided to retire. Everyone will miss her and we all wish her a happy retirement.

Handwashing

The School Nurse Mrs Anderson teaches the pupils about the importance of washing our hands after goingto the toilet and before meals!

Children in Need

Well done to the pupils of St Andrews as they have just raised a total of £444 for Children in Need! The Primary 4/3 class held a day of fun and games for the whole school and everyone came to school in fancy dress. During lunchtime the P5/4's held a karaoke competition. There was a sale's table at break time selling everything from second hand toys to fudge and handmade cards and Jess Butler came into school to paint the children's faces. Having fun while raising money!! What a brilliant idea! Well done to everyone who made the day a fantastic sucess!

Drumming with the Kakatsitsi drummers from Ghana

We were all treated to a wonderful concert by the Kakatsitsi drummers recently. Pupils, staff and parents were invited to listen to their unique style of drumming and dancing. Afterwards they very kindly ran workshops for the pupils and staff and everyone agreed what an enjoyable experience it had been!
