St Andrews goes "GREEN"
Our Eco Logo |
St Andrews Primary School pupils and staff were very proud to receive thrie Eco Schools "Silver Award" in October 2009. Led by "St Eco Greenies" our eco committee, everyone is now striving towards achieving our first "Green Flag" |
Below are a few of the changes that we have made within our school.
|
Recycool |
The school has registered for a scheme called Recycool. With this scheme the school will receive money in exchange for any old mobiles phones or ink cartridges which we collect. The school would be very grateful for donations of any of these items. We have a "Recycool" box in the foyer. |
|
Stamps |
We are also collecting stamps which are then passed on to various charities. The stamps need to be cut from the envelopes leaving a border of about one centimetre. |
| Used envelopes and batteries |
We are still collecting old batteries
and envelopes for recycling and we have boxes again in the foyer for
collection. |

Switching off lights A pupil came up with a wonderful idea to remind us to turn off our classroom lights when not in use and it was to cover the light switches with these lovely wee owls which say "Tweak my Beak" They have been a great success and both staff and pupils have been turning off lights when not needed!
|
This year the "Funky Chicken" has made a long awaited comeback. To encourage pupils and staff to turn off lights, data projectors and laptops when not in use, green leaves are awarded on a weekly basis. The "Funky Chicken" is awarded to the class or classes with the most green leaves at the end of a term. |

Bag the Bruck Bag the Bruck |
After last year's successful -and enjoyable!- Bag the Bruck, which was carried out by the younger classes, we hope to take part in this year's county wide clean-up. The offical clean-up organised by Environmental Concern Orkney, takes place during the weekend of the 17th and 18th April. The school hopes to clean up a local beach sometime near that date. |

Bruck Brigade
|
The newly formed P4 Bruck Brigade are now on duty during the morning break. Their task is to collect any leftover fruit or peel which is then used to feed worms in our worm farm or feed local chickens and goats. For an update on more eco activities please click here
