on the Parent Council
What
is The Parent Council?
As a parent of a child in our school you automatically become
a member of the Parent Forum and Parents are invited to attend
AGM meetings as observers or contributors. The Parent Council
works together with everyone involved in school life- parents,
learners, teachers, school staff and the wider community-
to support the school. The council itself is made up of parents,
teachers and co-opted members. Our local councillors come
along too, to help support the school.
Parent
Council meets once a term, with additional meetings when there
are special events, e.g. preparing for a fundraiser or helping
out at parents evenings. We hope that you, our parents can
find a small amount of time to support your Parent Council
and our wonderful school.

Main Entrance to our school
St
Andrews Primary School
Opened
in December 1995, St Andrews Primary School was built as a seven class
primary school with a nursery for the children of Deerness, Holm,
St Mary's, Tankerness and Toab. It was officially opened in June 1996
by Jim Wallace, MP for Orkney and Shetland.
Since extension work in 2003-04, there is a larger hall, eight class
bases and two shared areas in the ground floor of the teaching area.
Upstairs there is a computer room, small library area, art/ craft
base and teachers resource room.
The nursery is well equipped with both morning and afternoon sessions
for Nursery (3 year olds) and Pre-school (4 year olds)
In the administration area there is a Staff Room, The Office, Head
teacher's Office and a general purpose class base used for musical
activities as well as a Medical Inspection Room.
The school is surrounded by grassy and hard surfaced play areas which
are being developed gradually. At present there is a wooden Trim Track,
pond and wetland area, Victoria's Garden, a weather station and imaginative
games painted on the tarmac. Bulbs, trees and bushes have been planted
and further development of the of the outside of the school is on
going thanks to the Grounds for learning project.
There
are currently around 180 pupils at StAndrews, that includes the Nursery
pupils. The average class size is about 22 pupils per class.

Glowing
Report for St Andrews
|
| We
are very pleased to post a copy of the report of HMIe visit
to our school in June 2010 on our school website.
Our
experience of the inspection was a positive one, and I am very
pleased to read in the report that the inspectors noted much
of the very good work that goes on in our school, including
friendly and polite children who are involved in improving the
school and the lives of others; positive relationships between
most members of the school community; and high-quality learning
experiences for the children. These strengths are the foundation
of a school that is in a good place to move forward with creativity
and imagination, in trust and respect, with whatever challenges
lie ahead.
We
note areas where we would like to do better: continue to work
on improving standards in writing; look at how we organise support
for learning in our school; and consider making better use of
self-evaluation in nursery. The enthusiastic and dedicated team
here at St Andrews has already begun to make plans for the coming
year in these areas, and as always we would appreciate thoughts
and ideas from parents and children on how to improve what we
offer.
We
strive to provide the most effective opportunities for all our
learners at St Andrews, and with the support of our community
can continue to ensure high standards in everything we do.

Standards
and Quality Report Wordle

Wordle
is a program that takes a whole document, counts the words and
the more often a word is used, the bigger it is on the wordle
page. We have put the Standards and Quality Report into wordle,
and you can tell from the bigger words what is most important
in our school. If you would like to read the full version then
click on the link above the wordle. Please click on the photo
itself for a larger file if you should wish to print it out
or view it better. |

Occasionally
due to severe weather conditions, pupils may be sent home early
or the school may close until the weather improves. Details
of school closures are usually broadcast on Radio Orkney in
the morning during severe weather conditions or parents can
use the school closure hotline above to find out more details. |
| Our
Privacy Promise |
We
are very aware of parents concerns as regards to the school
website and appreciate that some parents/ carers may not want
their children to be published online, so we are careful not
to upload any photos or information about pupils whose parents
have not given permission to the school. For parents who have
given permission, we are still very careful not to identify
any pupils. We will never identify a child alongside a photograph
or give out personal details of any of our pupils. |
